Los Islotes Hosts Panama’s Minister of Tourism

First, happy 2015.

This is the first chance I’ve had to write this New Year. Our Los Islotes team hit the ground running Jan. 2 and hasn’t stopped to take a breath since. We’re moving as quickly and as aggressively as we can to take advantage of the clear and sunny skies. Infrastructure work continues in earnest, as does construction of our Founder’s Lodge, with the help of the new concrete batch plant we invested in in December.

Meantime, our little corner of Panama is attracting more attention all the time. As we reported at the time, Kathleen and I met with Panama’s President Varela and many of his cabinet during an official state visit to Mariato, the capital town of the district where Los Islotes is located, last November. During that visit we were able to speak one-on-one with several high-level officials, including the President himself, the Minister of Tourism, the Director of AMPYME (the government agency focused on small- and medium-sized business development), and the Director of ANAM (the country’s environmental agency).

The overriding theme in all of our conversations was the same: The Azuero Sunset Coast is definitely on this government´s radar…which is great news to all of us who’ve already invested here.

Fast forward to January, when Panama’s Minister of Tourism Jesus Sierra decided to return to the Azuero coast, this time for a private tour of the Los Islotes property. Kathleen, Gary, and I hosted Minister Sierra, the Director of APYME, and a couple of dozen other representatives of government, all of whom wanted to see and discuss firsthand our vision and development plans for the Los Islotes community.

Los Islotes Hosts The Minister of Tourism

Over lunch at our Rancho, the ministers made it clear that the current administration has targeted the western coast of the Azuero Peninsula, specifically the coast around Mariato, for development. They’re investing in supporting tourism growth, small business growth, and the development of health and education services.

Further, the Ministry of Tourism is plans to open a tourism office in Mariato and man it with three employees, two of whom will speak English. The role of the office will be to promote tourism in the area and to expand and support existing tourism businesses.

The new tourism office is expected to be open within the next five months. The site has already been selected and approved with construction scheduled to start shortly, if it hasn’t already.

2015 will be a very big year for Los Islotes. We’re pushing for completion of our Founder’s Lodge by the end of the year. We plan to begin construction of our Mango Village casitas. Gary is hoping to complete Phase One infrastructure. And now we’re enjoying unprecedented support and investment from the current administration. The timing for this positive attention could not be better.

If you haven’t been down here to see for yourself all that’s going on, I urge you to make plans to do just that as soon as possible. To that end, Kathleen and I would like to invite you to take part in our upcoming “Discover Los Islotes Weekend” tour scheduled for Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 23. As of this writing, a few spots remain available for this first Discover Los Islotes Weekend of the year.
